Shilpa Mankikar: The Brown Spike Lee? on American Desis Podcast
As we start 2016 and look to the future, we thought it was important to take a look back- to look back at our history as Desis in this country. So we welcomed Shilpa Mankikar, a filmmaker and activist, to tell us about her experience making films in the states and in India. Through this conversation, we were schooled on the trials and tribulations our community has faced, from the Sikh isolation in the early 1900s to the "Dot Busters" of the 1980s. But this isn't just a history lesson. We dive into the present day to understand what we can learn from the Indian filmmaking experience, as we try to build a better infrastructure for American Desi filmmakers now.
